TNYA is proud to provide an Adult Learn-to-Swim program (ALTS) aiming to teach New Yorkers basic water skills. Our course will teach you to jump confidently into deep water, tread water for at least a minute, float (back and front) for at least a minute, rhythmically breathe with a freestyle (front crawl) stroke (at least 25 yards), swim backstroke (at least 25 yards), and safely and confidently exit the pool from the deep end.
We are dedicated to meeting participants where they are in their swimming journey. Our coaches are US Masters Swimming certified Adult Learn to Swim instructors following the U.S.A. Swimming adult learn to swim curriculum. Classes are capped so as to yield at most a 1 : 3 instructor : student ratio.
Our program is offered as a six-session course at our Tribeca, Hell’s Kitchen, and South Bronx locations. Because the curriculum does not work if you don’t attend at least six classes, we don’t offer free trials, partial courses, or one-off classes. We do, however, offer multiple times and allow you to mix and match both times and locations to find the six classes that work best for you, although we strongly recommend at least one class per week to allow you to make steady progress.
We chargeParticipants must pre-pay for a course of six, and we regret that we cannot offer refunds if you want to stop the course for any reason other than documented medical reasons (you can find our full refund policy in our Terms and Conditions).
If a class is full, you can either join the waitlist, which you can do direct on the Mindbody site, or book another time or location. Note that classes open 60 days in advance on a rolling basis, so on May 1 (for example), you can book classes until June 30.
TNYA also supports the ALTS program operated by +POOL, a New York City nonprofit driving free and safe access to the waters around New York City for swimming.
The ALTS program is appropriate for those without basic lifesaving swimming skills to get themselves to safety if they were to fall into deep water. If you already have these basic lifesaving skills, then the appropriate clinic program for you is our intermediate swim clinic program called Technique Development. If you do not yet have these lifesaving skills, then ALTS is the appropriate program for you!
Sponsorships and Financial Aid
Thanks to Pride Gives Back, US Masters Swimming, and the USA Swimming Foundation, we now offer financial aid for our ALTS program. If you cannot afford the $19.50 per class payment, we have funds to assist you! Please complete our financial aid application and allow two weeks for processing.
